13th place finish for new partners Knopf and Smith

In the first tournament of the AVP year, Knopf records a personal best 13th place finish with new partner Saralyn Smith.

In their first debut as new partners, Knopf finished a personal best 13th with Saralyn Smith at the opening 2008 AVP tournament in Miami, Florida. Knopf's previous best finish was 17th (7 times). "This is SO great! It was Saralyn and my first AVP together and to finish that well was so fun, especially since we have only been partners for a couple of weeks!" The pair entered the tournament ranked 18th and knew it would be a tough weekend, but one Angela's never been able to participate in. "Finally, I was able to play in the first tournament of the year and didn't have to watch it on my computer and TV back home. A year ago I was in a cast, so to take this 13th place finish is so sweet!"

Knopf and Smith's first opponent was the #15 team of Stacey Rouwenhurst and Paula Roca (both successful players for a number of years). The match was close as the first two games both featured ties at 16-16. However, Roca's strong serve in the wind was too much for Smith and Knopf and they took the match 21-17, 21-17. That set up a match up with the #17 team of Julie Romias and Brooke Langston, who have been playing very well. The match-up was a marathon, lasting an hour in the intense heat and humidity, but Knopf and Smith made a last minute push in game 3 to win it 15-13 after being down 7-12. Both teams were drenched and exhausted. "That game against Julie and Brooke was such a battle. It was one of the closest games I've played in a long time. It was fun volleyball!" This secured the 13th place finish and placed them up against #9 team Jenny Kropp and Nancy Mason for a 9th place finish. The first game was tough for Angela and Saralyn and they lost 21-15 before rallying back in game 2 to win 21-16 to force a game 3. This game was close until the end when Kropp and Mason won the match 15-12.

"This weekend was so great! I really enjoyed playing with Saralyn and playing against these tough teams! It's really fun to be out there playing!" Knopf and Smith don't have too long to relish in the good opening tournament since they leave in just a few short days for stop #2 on the AVP tour in Dallas, Texas on Wednesday April 16th. The tournament will take place April 18th - 20th. Anyone can follow along with this pair's success on http://www.avp.com/, or http://www.bvbinfo.com/ during the tournament.
